Gejala awal dari keracunan metanol adalah akan menjadi mabuk tanpa bau etanol selama 6 jam pertama.
Lalu, pada 6-24 jam setelah dikonsumsi, zat metanol akan menyebabkan gangguan penglihatan berupa skotoma, pandangan kabur dan buta total, hingga berujung kematian.
Orang yang keracunan metanol juga akan mengalami penurunan kesadaran, koma, kejang, dan pankreatitis atau peradangan pada pankreas secara tiba-tiba.
