Population Apocalypse, Israeli Scientists Find Answers to Infertile Men

The World Health Organization (WHO) report in 2023 shows that 1 in 6 adults globally will experience infertility or infertility. This study took samples from 1990 to 2021.
However, a research group in Israel managed to find a glimmer of hope regarding this problem. The Strait Times report said that a laboratory at Israel's Bar-Ilan University had succeeded in growing artificial testicles.
The testicles are the site of sperm production, which is a crucial fluid for fertilization. According to Israeli researchers, artificial testicles could help with infertility in men in the future.
These artificial organs (organoids) were produced from extracted testicular cells in mice, according to a New York Post report, quoted Thursday (22/2/2024).
So far, testicles made by Israeli researchers have not been able to produce sperm. However, researchers led by Dr Nitzan Gonen, said artificial testicles have a structure and genetic characteristics that are similar to real testicles.
The research team said the artificial testicles from the mice were proven to function well within 9 weeks. In fact, it is enough time to produce sperm and secrete hormones.
According to the research team, currently the artificial testicles are showing signs of entering the process of meiosis, namely the reduction of chromosomes by half to form sperm cells.
Until now, the research team is still waiting for the final results on whether artificial testicles can actually produce sperm and other sexual hormones such as testosterone.
In the future, researchers want to develop artificial testicles that come directly from human cells (stem cells). If successful, this could truly be the answer to male infertility.
"Fertility clinics have so far been able to identify problems that cause infertility. For example, a low sperm count or abnormal structure. However, no one can really provide an answer to the cause," said Dr Gonen.
"For example, what genome mutation causes infertility, or what is wrong with the function of the testicles so that the tube cannot carry sperm properly," he added.
Researchers say environmental pollution from food production and children's toys has an impact on male infertility, reported the Daily Mail.
With artificial testicles, it is hoped that fertility problems can be resolved. Apart from that, it is hoped that the same method can also create other artificial organs that can solve other health problems.

Sejauh ini, testis buatan peneliti Israel belum bisa memproduksi sperma. Namun, para peneliti yang dipimpin Dr Nitzan Gonen, mengatakan testis buatan memiliki struktur dan karakter genetik yang mirip dengan testis asli.
Tim peneliti mengatakan testis buatan dari tikus itu terbukti berfungsi dengan baik dalam 9 minggu. Sebenarnya itu adalah waktu yang cukup untuk memproduksi sperma dan hormon sekresi.
Menurut tim peneliti, saat ini testis buatan menunjukkan tanda memasuki proses meiosis, yakni pengurangan kromosom hingga setengah untuk membentuk sel sperma.
Hingga kini, tim peneliti masih menunggu hasil akhir apakah testis buatan benar-benar bisa memproduksi sperma dan hormon seksual lainnya seperti testosteron.
Ke depan, peneliti ingin mengembangkan testis buatan yang berasal langsung dari sel manusia (sel induk). Jika berhasil, ini benar-benar merupakan jawaban kemandulan pada pria.
“Klinik fertilitas sejauh ini mampu mengidentifikasi masalah yang menyebabkan kemandulan. Misalnya, jumlah sperma yang sedikit atau struktur abnormal. Tapi, belum ada yang benar-benar bisa memberikan jawaban atas penyebabnya,” kata Dr Gonen.
“Misalnya, mutasi genom apa yang menyebabkan kemandulan, atau apa yang salah dari fungsi testis sehingga tabung tak bisa membawa sperma dengan baik,” tambahnya.
Para peneliti mengatakan polusi lingkungan dari produksi makanan dan mainan anak kecil berdampak pada kemandulan pria, lapor Daily Mail.
Dengan adanya testis buatan, diharapkan masalah kesuburan bisa terselesaikan. Selain itu, metode yang sama juga diharapkan dapat menciptakan organ-organ buatan lain yang mampu menyelesaikan masalah kesehatan lain.
