'Danger' Revealed Why Midwives Don't Want to Help Mothers Give Birth, Babies Soak Up on the Street

A pregnant woman in Jember, East Java experienced the unfortunate fate.

The mother was forced to give birth on the street because she was refused when she went to the midwife clinic which was located not far from where she lived. The mother with the initials H was forced to give birth on the street because she could no longer bear the pain of giving birth. This incident occurred last Wednesday (20/12/2023), at around 02.00 WIB in the morning.

Later, it was revealed why the private midwife refused to give birth to the mother who was about to give birth. Head of Sidomulyo Village, Silo District, Jember, Kamil, said that his party had carried out an investigation regarding pregnant women who were rejected by midwives.
According to him, the bedan refused because he was afraid of being blamed by the Puskesmas.

"It turns out that the local midwives didn't dare help because they were afraid of being blamed by the local health center," he said.

He said, if this continues, it will have fatal consequences.
"If there is a village midwife who ends up being blamed by the Puskasmas, this is dangerous," said Kamil as quoted by Surya.co.id.

According to him, health management in Jember Regency is very weak. In fact, he said, this could endanger someone's life.

"This means that health management in Jember Regency is very weak," he added.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Village Government Association (Apdesi) Jember, Kamiluddin, said that the mother who was about to give birth had indeed asked the local midwife for help. However, it was rejected due to problems with the Practice License (SIP).

Response from the Jember Health Department Head of the Jember Health Service, Dr Hendro Soelistijono, denied that there had been any patient neglect by the midwives at that location.
According to the chronology presented by Hendro, initially the mother felt pain before giving birth.

At that time, she and her husband immediately went to the Sumberbaru Health Center.
But somehow, the mother found it unbearable and then gave birth on the street.

"But when she arrived at Kaliglagah Village, the mother felt unbearable heartburn, finally stopped and suddenly gave birth there," said Hendro. He admitted that the pregnant woman's husband had indeed asked the local midwife for help.

However, the midwife was unwilling due to SIP problems.
"But somehow, the village midwife was unwilling. Finally, she asked the midwife who had an area (had a SIP) for help," said Hendro.

Due to this incident, he also emphasized that a midwife does not need to show SIP when treating patients with emergency conditions. In this case, said Hendro, his party will coordinate with the Indonesian Midwives Association (IBI).

"To ask midwives who don't want to help, we have to take it to a professional organization. Because actually there is no reason why midwives don't want to help emergency patients," he explained.
