GENEVA - The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that more than 1.4 million new cases of Covid-19 and more than 1,800 deaths from the disease were recorded worldwide from July 31 to August 27, 2023.
WHO issued this warning on Friday (1/9/2023). "These figures represent a 38% increase in the number of cases and a 50% decrease in the number of deaths compared to the previous 28-day period," WHO said in its weekly bulletin. "South Korea (South Korea) has the highest number of new cases (1,296,710) and deaths (596)," WHO said. Italy has nearly 27,000 new cases, followed by the UK with 26,000 new cases.
The largest increase in new cases occurred in the Eastern Mediterranean (+113%), West Pacific (+52%) and the European Region (+39%), while Africa (-76%) and Southeast Asia (-48%) experienced a decrease.
WHO attributes this increase in cases to the new corona virus variant 'Eris', which is now the most widespread, and has been found in 26% in the second week of August. The 'Arturo' variant was found in 22.7% of cases in 109 countries, whereas 'Kraken' was reported in 124 countries but appears to have receded. According to WHO, there have been more than 770 million cases of Covid-19 and more than 6.9 million deaths due to the virus since the start of the pandemic.

“Korea Selatan (Korsel) memiliki jumlah kasus baru tertinggi (1.296.710) dan kematian (596),” papar WHO.
