ROUND LIGAMENT PAIN

ROUND LIGAMENT PAIN

Ever had an occasional sharp stabbing pain in your groin during pregnancy, particularly as you enter the second trimester? If so it may well be round ligament pain. The uterus (womb) only measures around 7-8 cm when you're not pregnant, growing to around 40cm when you are ready to give birth at around 40 weeks. Thats a lot of growing!!
.
The uterus needs to be held in place otherwise it would flop all over the place so it has a couple of ligaments either side keeping it in position.
.
When you become pregnant, your baby grows extremely quickly and the uterus also grows rapidly to accomodate this. In turn the ligaments also stretch and thin which can cause a sharp stabbing sensation, or even a dull ache in your groin. Usually it only occurs on one side or another (occasionally both). It might happen briefly for a few seconds or may occur on and off throughout the day but should not be there constantly. it may occur if you move quickly, sneeze or cough forcefully. Round ligament pain wont harm the baby but it is pretty annoying and uncomfortable for you!
.
As with ANY abdominal pain you experience in pregnancy, if it becomes severe, constant or is accompanied by vaginal bleeding be sure to seek advice from your care provider.
.
Did you experience round ligament pain?
