 - Have you often heard of cases of strokes occurring in the bathroom? It's not just a myth, this incident can indeed be explained medically. According to neurosurgeons, the risk of stroke in the bathroom is related to constipation. What's the explanation like?

This was conveyed by a neurosurgeon specialist, Dr. Nur Setiawan Suroto, MD., Ph.D IFAANS or who is familiarly called Dr. Iwan. According to him, people who experience constipation or have hard bowel movements will push hard. In this condition, blood pressure can increase, which then risks triggering a stroke.

"Indeed, there are activities in the bathroom that actually make it easier to trigger a stroke. Especially when it is related to consumption patterns. We know that when in the bathroom, the patient is defecating, at that time there is an increase in blood pressure too. "Because when you defecate, pressure will automatically arise," he explained to detikcom, Friday (2/2/2024).

"Especially when you have constipation or the term constipation. Then the activity will become more strenuous, which will make it easier for blood pressure to rise. Therefore, we often find patients who are known to their families to have an attack while they are in the bathroom," continued Dr. Iwan.

Dr. Iwan explained that stroke is always closely related to food intake. So to prevent the risk of stroke, Dr. Iwan advises people to always consume fruit and vegetables. Not only to prevent various diseases, it is also to prevent constipation which can lead to stroke, especially in people with hypertension.
"So he has hypertension and then he pushes hard, then his blood pressure will spike suddenly and cause a stroke," concluded Dr. Iwan.
