6 Signs You're Drinking Too Much Coffee

Drinking coffee has now become part of Indonesian life. In the past, coffee was synonymous with drinks for older people or men, but now coffee has become part of the lifestyle of young people. But be careful, consuming too much coffee can cause health problems. 

Local and foreign coffee shops are now increasingly mushrooming. The variety of coffee drinks offered is varied, ranging from black coffee, milk coffee, coffee with additional cheese topping and so on. 

For those of you who are coffee addicts, pay attention to the following health problems that will appear, as a sign that you have drunk too much coffee:

1. Feelings of anxiety

Coffee is often a loyal friend when you feel stressed about work deadlines or overtime at the office. However, the National Institute of Mental Health in the United States recommends that those of you who often experience anxiety disorders avoid coffee or caffeinated drinks. 

Caffeine can worsen anxiety and make it impossible for you to fall asleep or trigger the body's flight or fight response. So for those of you who feel anxious, it could be that you are drinking too much coffee. 

2. Stomach ache

Do you experience stomach pain, especially in the solar plexus area? It could be that the coffee you drink is the cause. Coffee can stimulate an increase in stomach acid and trigger complaints of pain in the pit of the stomach. 

The solution is that if you have a history of stomach ulcers, you should avoid drinking too much coffee. Also try to eat first before drinking coffee. 

3. Heart palpitations

One of the complaints of heart palpitations can be caused by excessive consumption of coffee. The caffeine content in coffee causes several cases of complaints of heart palpitations which lead to complaints of dizziness and fainting. So if you experience complaints of heart palpitations, you should avoid drinking coffee altogether. 

4. Diarrhea

In some people, coffee has a laxative effect and can make you defecate more often and even experience diarrhea. According to The International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, drinking more than 2 cups of coffee a day can increase your risk of developing diarrhea. 

So if your frequency of going back and forth to the bathroom increases, it's time for you to reduce your coffee consumption. 

5. Insomnia

When you need to stay up all night, coffee is often the first choice. However, drinking too much coffee will actually make it difficult for you to sleep. According to the Mayo Clinic in the United States, coffee can stay in the body for 14 hours. 

So, drinking too much coffee can certainly make it difficult for you to sleep, wake you up at night, and reduce your sleep quality. It would be better if you only drink coffee in the morning or afternoon. 

6. Headache

Caffeine (in the appropriate dose) can help relieve the headaches you experience. Therefore, it is not surprising that caffeine is often included in anti-pain drugs sold on the market. 

However, based on research conducted by Johns Hopkins University, drinking coffee with more than 500 mg of caffeine (equivalent to 5 cups of coffee) can actually make you experience headaches and body weakness. Apart from coffee, also pay attention to other sources of caffeine such as tea, soda or energy drinks. 

Even if you adhere to the principle of "no day without coffee", limit the amount of coffee you drink as much as possible if you don't want to experience the various health problems above. Drinking coffee is also beneficial for health, provided that sugar and creamer are not added, and it is consumed within certain limits.

Jika dahulu kopi identik dengan minuman untuk orang tua ataupun kalangan pria, namun sekarang kopi sudah menjadi bagian dari gaya hidup anak muda. Namun hati-hati, konsumsi kopi yang kelewat batas dapat menimbulkan gangguan kesehatan.

Kedai kopi lokal maupun luar negeri kini semakin menjamur. Variasi minuman kopi yang ditawarkan pun beragam, mulai dari kopi hitam, kopi susu, kopi dengan tambahan topping keju dan lain sebagainya.

Bagi Anda pecandu kopi, perhatikan gangguan kesehatan yang akan muncul berikut ini, sebagai tanda bahwa Anda sudah minum kopi terlalu banyak:

1. Perasaan cemas

Kopi sering kali menjadi teman setia di kala Anda merasa stres akan deadline pekerjaan atau lembur di kantor. Namun, The National Institute of Mental Health di Amerika Serikat menyarankan bagi Anda yang sering mengalami gangguan cemas untuk menghindari kopi ataupun minuman berkafein.

Kafein dapat memperparah kecemasan dan membuat Anda tidak dapat tertidur pulas atau mencetuskan respon flight or fight tubuh. Jadi bagi Anda yang merasa cemas, bisa jadi kopi yang Anda minum sudah terlalu banyak.

2. Sakit perut

Anda mengalami nyeri perut terutama di area ulu hati? Bisa jadi kopi yang Anda minum merupakan penyebabnya. Kopi dapat merangsang peningkatan asam lambung dan mencetuskan keluhan nyeri di ulu hati.

3. Jantung berdebar

Keluhan jantung berdebar salah satunya dapat disebabkan oleh konsumsi kopi yang berlebihan. Kandungan kafein yang terdapat di dalam kopi menyebabkan beberapa kasus keluhan jantung berdebar yang berujung pada keluhan pusing berputar dan pingsan. Jadi jika Anda mengalami keluhan jantung berdebar, sebaiknya hindari sama sekali minum kopi.

4. Diare

Selain kopi, perhatikan juga sumber kafein lainnya seperti teh, soda atau minuman berenergi.

Meski Anda menganut prinsip “tiada hari tanpa ngopi”, sebisa mungkin batasi jumlah kopi yang Anda minum jika tak ingin mengalami berbagai gangguan kesehatan di atas. Minum kopi juga bermanfaat untuk kesehatan, dengan catatan tidak ditambahkan gula dan creamer, serta dikonsumsi dalam batas tertentu.
